Roy Lichtenstein was one of the most influential and innovative artists of the second half of the twentieth century. He is prominently identified with Pop Art. His first fully achieved paintings were based on imagery from comic strips and advertisements and rendered in a style mimicking the crude printing processes of newspaper reproduction. These paintings reinvigorated the American art scene and altered the history of modern art
Around 1960s Lichtenstein began toying with comic book characters and flat backgrounds and famously began appropriating the Ben-Day dots from mechanical patterning. These dots were originally used to con vey variations in texture and color in commercial design and mechanical patterns. it was this investigation / interest that formed his characteristic style. Lichtenstein would restrict his paint colors to imitate the four colors of printer inks’. He also used Ben-Day dots; a system devised to increase the tonal range of commercial printing through a dot screen method to achieve a fuller range of hue and tone. This combined with his use of bold outlines made up his signature style. . His "Comicy" style uses blocked coloring(shapes of color), whimsical speech bubbles, thick outlines, and Benday dots, Charactterisitc Style -Bold coloring (color blocking) -Ben Day dots - Bold outlining - Whimsical portrayals. Inspired by Roy Lichtenstein's artwork and our privious, contour and tonal painted fruit projects, students will create a pop art portrait. . Students will use the characteristics of Liechtenstein . the EI benday dots, whimsical speech bubbles (think meme) and shape/ blocked coloring. to create their art.
