Released by Apple Computer, Inc., in November 2001, the iPod rapidly grew in sales and by 2005 had become the world’s top-selling MP3 player. With a 1,000-song capacity, the first iPod worked only with Apple computers and retailed at $400. From 2003 to 2005, however, Apple ferociously promoted five new Windows-compatible iPod models, along with the company’s digital music store, iTunes. In an attempt to define the fun associated with the iPod brand and to steer advertising away from the Apple computer, the company released its ‘‘Silhouette’’ campaign.
In October 2003 ad agency TBWA\Chiat\Day (TBWA\C\D) introduced outdoor ‘‘Silhouette’’ ads in Los Angeles, followed by a nationwide print and television launch. All ads displayed black silhouettes of people listening to white iPods and dancing in front of radiant green, yellow, fuchsia, and pink backgrounds. Only 72 hrs after the release and With Bono's and U2s endorsement Apple stock reached a 52-week high of $53.20 per share. Why was this ad so effective. It was simple and eye catching!. A silhouette is the image of a person, animal, object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single colour, usually black, with its edges matching the outline of the subject. The interior of a silhouette is featureless, and the silhouette is usually presented on a light background, usually white, or none at all. Traditionally silhouettes have often been used in advertising, particularly in poster design, because they can be cheaply and effectively printed. in addition to being understood with only a glance |
Positive and Negative Space... why is it important
In art, negative space is the space around and between the subject of the image. The positive space is the subject or object of the image. This is a very important concept in art and is the fundamental idea behind Sillouttes.
Negative Space Why is it important? Negative space is important because it can help us to draw accurately and can help with creating an interesting composition. How can negative space help us to draw accurately? Being aware of the shapes, negative space makes can help us draw. If we were drawing a pile of paper clips, it would help to notice the shapes between them. This would help us to create an accurate drawing. See the shapes outlined in red below. If we were drawing a chair, noticing the shapes between the legs would help us get the legs of the chair in place. Even the shapes between the leaves of a plant can help us to create an accurate drawing. |
The Assignment
Using the method of drawing negative space and silhouettes of the positive we are going to digitally draw 2 to three objects that relate to a place. This can be a museum or business or even just an event like a party. We are going to overlap our slots to make a graphic that we can create a poster from. Type can be minimal, it is more about the sillouttes and how you craft, arrange, manipulate them!!! This is a good opportunity for students who are interested in art college to get some observational drawing. Instead of using a photo as my tutorial suggests when creating the sillouttes... Draw from life... You are welcome to bring in any objects, as long as they are not bigger than a shoebox. I have a variety of props and things in my class as well to choose from
Step one:
Choose a place to advertise for. Again, this can be real or fictitious
Srep two:
Decide what objects will best go with and represent your place.
Step three
in illustrator begin to draw those items as sillouttes (in different files or layer please!)
Step four
Overlap them in a clever and appealing way. Look for shapes.
Step five
Color the shapes in
Step six
add text tto advertise for your event Business or location

Skill Oneusing in animate objects create a oberlapped silloutte poster that advertises for a place or event. The object you choose to draw should relate to place or event. Students whom are interested in art school should accept the challenge of creating these sillouttes from direct observation. hense you will need to bring in items to draw or choose from my stock.

TutorialPlease note that this tutorial instructs you to use a photograph as reference, but for those students who want the challenge do not use a photo and draw from life... All other tutorial elements will remain the same though.
