Shoes in Art history
Shoes in art have long held a fascination for artists from Van Goch to Alan Jones, the shoe holds its own as an icon and inspiration. The obscure French painter, Arthur Chaplin assembled a personal collection of vintage shoes in his apartment on the IIe Saint-Louis and used them to inspire his works. Van Gogh's Shoes From 1886 to 1888, Van Gogh was living in Paris. It was during this time that he created many still life paintings; a lot of these were of fish or fruit, but there were several paintings he created of shoes. One of the most notable shoe paintings that Van Gogh created was A Pair of Shoes, 1886. This painting was discussed in an essay titled “The Origin of the Work of Art” by Martin Heidegger in the 1930s and has since been the subject of many debates surrounding art and life. Another reason that the shoe paintings, still will fascinate individuals today is that these works are also often interpreted as a study of Van Gogh’s life. In these paintings, he captures a pair or pairs of shoes on the floor most with laces untied as if they have just been taken off at the end of a long day. Unlike other still life subjects, the shoes have been to all the places and have seen all of the struggles of the owner. To many, Van Gogh’s shoes with the worn leather and tired soles represent the rough life of the artist himself and the weathered journey he has endured. |
Shoe Lifestyle Still Life Photography
Photographer Aldo Chacon has recently completed a personal project that showcases different Nike shoes in various environments with the goal of linking cultural iconography with footwear to tell a story.
"Nike’s World is a personal project inspired by different periods of time in our history, technological advancements, global warming and nature related subjects as well as social and political issues and of course sports. The idea for the project was to tell stories through materials and objects. The reasoning for using Nike shoes as the main “subject” for the photo series was to include a sense of iconography and pop culture to draw people’s attention to specific ideas and have that as a hook for exploration. I wanted to use sneakers as my main subject as a way to tell a story and transport the viewer to a world without the prejudgment of having a person as the main subject and just let their imaginations decide who’s the owner of that shoe " -Aldo Chacon Artist statement about "Space" Space | Inspired by space, the cold war era, the technological advancements that have taken place since the Moon’s landing as well as a glimpse of what future life could look like and the current “space race” between corporations. |

Project overviewPulling inspiration from both Van Gogh and Aldo Chacon's Nike series, we are going to create a Still life that features a SHOE that is also narrative portrait. The Still life should set a stage that tells a story about the type of person who wears the shoe. Departing from the Van Gogh and Aldo we are going to focus our rendering contour line drawing and tonal value studies. This will be a create projects to help master lighting, drawing, and cell shading.
