Shinning some Light
The word Chiaroscuro itself is Italian, and roughly means, “light and dark.” It describes the prominent contrast of light and shade in a painting, drawing or print, and the skill demonstrated by the artist in the management of shadows to create the illusion of three-dimensional forms.
Art that demonstrate Chiaroscuro appear as if the light areas of a form are emerging from darkness. As iff they are coming forward and forcing the view to notice them. Shining the light .
This technique was used first by Da Vinci, than Caravaggio and finally, it was used to its best by Rembrandt.

Mental Health Awareness
May is Mental Health awareness month. The aim of the movement is to shed some Light on a topic that effect a lot of people who sometime feel like they are in the dark. Much like chiaroscuro art. Chiaroscuro lighting aims to bring forward and illuminate subjects from the dark.
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
A large proportion of the people who have a mental disorder have more than one. Over 44 million American adults have a mental health condition. Almost 1 in 5 Americans experiences mental health problems each year (18.5 percent). In the U.S. and much of the developed world, mental disorders are one of the leading causes of disability.
It can be scary for someone to realize they may be dealing with a mental health condition. Many will reach out to those closest to them for support and understanding. For some, these experiences end up being negative due to the responses they may receive. Instead of being supportive, those closest to these individuals may say harmful and hurtful things that lead to loneliness and isolation.
Mental Health awareness is such important and relative cause .We need to speak up early and educate people about risky behavior and its connection to mental illness—and do so in a compassionate,judgement-free way. If 1 and 5 adults statistically suffer from a mental health disorder than it is more than like you yourself know a friend or family member whom has experienced this.

Step one: RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT
Pick a mental health topic from the provided list and then answer the questions bellow (this will be worth 25 project points as it is your research) In your Do Now portfolio answer the following questions in a short research paragraph (100 words)
Step two: CREATE AN AWARENESS ARTWORK
first find a portrait that best Illustrates your choose mental health topic. ie if you choose Anxiety you can pick a picture that shows something who displays worry! *Hint, since we will be turning this into a chiaroscuro line artwork look for a picture that has VALUE LOTS OF DARK. Step Three turn it black and white in Photoshop cut out the background and make it chiaroscuro duplicate the layer and create a cutout version of it Step Four trace the main white shapes, then add line work with the blend tool for the Mid towns that then fade to black Step Five Add text. You can either find a poem that describes and gives awareness to your mental health state and weave it through your portrait. Good Examples of photos to start with |
projectStudents using the pen tool in conjunction with organic shapes will create a portrait That "Shines some Light" on a mendal illness in preparation for May's Mental Health Awareness Month.
