Street Art: Graffiti
Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art vans. ... Common forms and media include spray paint graffiti, stencil graffiti, wheat pasted poster art, sticker art, street installations, and sculpture. What was once seen as just a nuisance and violation of the law has taken on new respect as many artist have used this medium to voice a message to the public. Sometimes important message of politics, injustices or empowerment.

Shepard Fairy Shepard Fairey, a widely known graphic/ street artist. His style is composed of stencil, bold cut out shapes. . He was born on February 15, 1970 in Charleston, South Carolina in the United States. In 1988, the artists graduated from Idyllwild Arts Academy in Palm Springs, California. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island in 1992.Shepard Fairey is one of the most influential street artists of our time. Shepard Fairey’s work has been used in screen-prints, stencils, stickers, masking film illustrations, wheat paste, collages, sculptures, posters, paintings, and murals. Shepard Fairey enjoys working with the colors black, white, and red. Fairey has constantly shifted between the realms of fine art, commercial art, street art, and even political art. His most famous art includes images of Andre the Giant, the Obey trademark, the propaganda poster of Barack Obama, and many more. As a young adult, Shepard Fairey became very interested in art. He soon began to use his drawings in T-shirts and skateboards. He was a skateboard-obsessed art student. While in school, Shepard Fairey held a part-time job in a skateboarding shop. Soon after, he hit the skateboard community hard by pasting homemade stickers all over the place. It was then that he realized his desire and interest in the street art culture and graffiti movement. Another strong influence was his love for punk music, which he demonstrated stencils. |
Taking its name from the first line of the US constitution, the series We the People features portraits of Native Americans, African Americans, Muslims, and Latinas depicted in Fairey’s trademark style, with slogans such as “Women are Perfect” and “Defend Dignity.”
The series was commissioned by non-profit organization the Amplifier Foundation.
“It’s really about making sure that people remember that ‘we the people’ means everyone, it means all the people,” Fairey said. “I think the campaigns were very divisive, more from one side than the other. But [it’s] just reminding people to find their common humanity, and look beyond maybe one narrow definition of what it means to be American.”

Shepard Fairys Style
Shepard Fairey’s work combines elements of graffiti, pop art, business art, and Marxist theory. His graphic and street art always conveys a message. Images His visual graphics are normally very smooth and utilizing a vector look of shapes layered on top of one another to create his character and image. Words Sometimes to further his message Shepard will use text to convey his intent. for example to inspire hope in a a presidency campaign he use a big bold type spelling HOPE on the bottom. This Graphic is non other than the famous Hope poster for Barack Obama's 2008 Campaign . This poster also received the Brit Insurance Design of the Year Award in 2009. Or you can take it a step further and do a portrait of a student in a football helmet to signify your belief that sports are an important part of our school culture. In addition, you will also add at least one more word or phrase that adds further meaning.

Practice Assignment: Shepard Fairey A Piece of Fruit!
Using one of the templates below, Trace each ORGANIC shape of color you see. Each color will need to be on different layers so that you can move them around so they are visible. Consider this like a making a shape Pizza pie... First, you draw the round shape for the crust, then you add a layer on top to draw the sauce , and then again for the cheese on top. There is no step by step tutorial for this, but I will go over it on the big board to show you the process.

Starting the Project
Now that you have mastered the style, lets collage together and begin rendering your portrait.
Step onefirst pick a person or portrait to vector, and choose a slogan or a word that conveys a meaning. Extra Credit will be awarded if the your art has a MESSAGE!

Step two: add the border and hand in on google classroom so it can be added to our Big "We are Arlington" Mosaic.
Extra CreditNext pasted in back in Photoshop and place it into perspective on a wall or building as graffiti.

assignmentStudents are to create a graffiti style graphic inspired by Shepard Fairy. The graphic must incorporate one "TAG" word that relates the person they choose to render into a graphic. Students will use their overlapping and layering skills in illustrators to create their vector to which they will then apply it to a wall or urban exterior in Photoshop. The twist however is that they must apply in in perspective therefor employing their skills in 1 pt and 2 pt perspective.
