What is pop art
Pop art is an art movement that emerged in the 1950s and flourished in the 1960s in America and Britain. The art was inspiration from popular and commercial culture such as advertising, Hollywood movies and pop music, things that were important or popular to the time. What is relevant/ important or a popular issue of today? The Art was characterized by the imagery of consumerism and popular culture (think the Campbell Soup Can) Key pop artists include Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake and David Hockney Characteristics of Pop Art Pop Art tended to have bold, simple, everyday imagery, and sometimes vibrant colors. Some critics described the art as interesting to look at and having a modern "hip" feel. The biggest characteristic of this art movement is that it sought to embody consumerism. the everyday and popular culture, ie trends, fashion, celebrities and even current events (remember the end of the 1960s was the Vietnam war. A lot was going on and opinions were high. Kind of like today) Each artist of the time embraced this differently , Andy Warhol printing many copies of his art (Campbell soup can) in efforts to relate to consumerism. While Liechtenstein created paintings that mimicked Comics (a popular trend ). Roy Lichtenstein In the early 1960s, Lichtenstein gained renown as a leading Pop artist for paintings sourced from comic books, specifically DC Comics. Although artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns had previously integrated popular imagery into their works, no one hitherto had focused on cartoon imagery as exclusively as Lichtenstein. His work, along with that of Andy Warhol, heralded the beginning of the Pop art movement, because they both aimed to create art that was relevant and important to the culture of the 60s. While Warhol used popular icons such as famous people for their art, roy used the style comics ( a popular and relevant past time) to create artwork. |
