Eiko Ojala, an illustrator and graphic designer from Estonia, gives a new meaning to cutting-edge digital illustration, by combining the warmth and texture of traditional materials with the technical and expressive potential made possible by digital design tools. He doesn't use any 3d modeling software, but instead graphics programs like photoshop and illustrator. These digital illustrations are distinctively minimal and inspired by paper cut art.
Cut paper Art Paper cutting is an art with a long history and many cultural references. Many other cultures began using paper cutting in a variety of different techniques and as part of celebrations. A couple of the most popular cultural uses for Papercutting are papal picado banners in Mexico or kirigami in Japan. Papercut silhouettes became popular in England during the Middle Ages. It became an art form in itself. However Its first origins date back to the 4th century after the invention of the paper by the Chinese. Some of their earliest uses for Papercutting were for religious decorations or stencils used for patterns in embroidery. The most basic description of cut paper art is art drawing or created on a paper through the use of cutting. Sometimes paper is completely cut through creating holes that makeup the image. Other times the paper is just scored, and bent to create a "relief". Tunnel book Cut Paper art The flat paper art got an upgrade with artist starting to use this paper art making as layers stacked on top to create an impressive depth. Often these artworks depict scenes watch that is just a landscape or a scene from a story. There are a few artistic principles that are crucial to this artwork Art elements Shapes - this seems obvious, both organic and geometric shapes are cut in paper to create the image. There are no lines, and color is not usually present. All artist use is shaped in positive and negative form to create their shapes. Depth- The apparent distance from front to back or near to far in an artwork. Techniques of perspective are used to create the illusion of depth. In the case of paper, it can be physical depth. Paper is layered on top to create an overlapping and consequently a foreground, mid ground and background. Color and contrast- Artist use color and tone in gradient steps of color change in each layer to create visual depth. |
Assignment One: Vector the scene
Using illustrator we will be creating a digital scene in the style of tunnel books. Students will use the characteristics, Shape, depth, color and theme to create their piece.
Step one: Choose a scene. This can be a scene from a story, and or game. Or it can be a real scene for real life. You can either choose pieces to make up the "scene" or you can picture that has depth and trace different parts Step two Vector the different layers into panel/ tunnel pieces. Step three Change the colors to show depth. Tutorial |
Assignment two: Animate the scene
Using after effects students will import each layer and add movement. The objective is to give an overall zoom effect. After you make and render the movement in after effects open it in premiere pro. And add speed and music. This project will serve as a introduction to animation and exploration of moving pictures.
