About Andy:
Andy Warhol was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. About The Art: Warhol started painting portraits on commission in the early 1960s. Andy Warhol began his commissioned portraits with a photo shoot using a Polaroid camera. The Polaroid afforded a very high contrast ( an exaggerated value) image that Warhol enlarged and transferred onto a silkscreen. Each portrait was “under painted” first. Warhol traced simple outlines of the photographic image onto the canvas and painted in shapes which is how he acheived his High Contrast Effect. White is the lightest value which portrays the highlights of an artwork ; black is the darkest which portrays the shadows of a an artwork. The value halfway between these extremes is called middle gray. High contrast graphics rely heavily on this art element( value). High contrast are the extreme/ exaggerated use of value i.e. Absolute white and black. High Contrast Portraits High Contrast Portriats are portriats that are made up of white and black shapes dipicting the lights and darks of the face i.e. The value of the portrait. . High Contrast style art came from the idea of Chiaroscuro. The word Chiaroscuro itself is Italian, and roughly means, “light and dark.” Any Warhol began to explore the high contrast style with his silk screening by allowing the Dark shapes to be very dark and the light areas just as one light tone, therefor only having two tones, one dark, one light. to makeup the whole portrait. today many famous/ reconizable protraits have been made using this black and white style, such as the Jimmy Hendrix Graphics and Che Guevara portrait. They are bold, thats why even logos todays use this theory of contrasting colors or black and white, to catch attention. |
