Faceted Sculptures: David Mesguich
Do Now Questions
Answer these questions bellow in google classroom
David Mesguich's SculpturesPaint, paste, and stencil-wielding creative types who use the urban fabric as their canvas are having a heyday. Folks like Shephard Fairey, Banksy, and a whole host of others (Hanksy!) have had feature films, major gallery shows, and endless internet posts chronicling—and celebrating—their efforts.
These still-illicit works often only exist as 2D forms on walls, gracing the sides of buildings, billboards, or any flat space in the concrete jungle. Brussels-based artist David Mesguich’s creates enormous geometric sculpture. Pieces of sculpture can be seen in public areas all over the world. It’s supposed to make a contribution to the city rather than to sell it out as these aren’t made to be sold. His work is also found in museums as well. Mesguich's sculptures can be described as faceted humanoids. They are made from recycled plastic sheets and range in scale from a realistically-sized person to a massive head. They're simultaneously beautiful and creepy, off-putting but engaging. Characteristics of David Mesguich's Sculptures The sculptures most notable characteristic are the treatment of their forms. How the forms are geometrically abstracted to be a polygonal form, sculptures, bearing line and shape work that is reminiscent of both geometric or vectorized patterns. His sculptures are almost reminiscent of low poly or old school 3d rendered models. He makes his sculpture forms by taking recycled plastic, and was folded into its final shape, |
What is Geometrical or a Polygonal FormYou’ve all seen it before, because frankly, this trend has been all over the place and for quite a few years now. But you don’t really know how to describe it — a bunch of similarly colored triangles or rectangles combining to create a intricate geometric shape, which somehow manages to be abstract but still demonstrates a clear figure of some sort? What is this magical style and how was it created?
We’ve got you covered — it’s been dubbed low-poly art. The name refers back to the style’s origin as rendering 3D models for video games. Though it seems as if you are using many polygons, in reality there are relatively few in comparison to the number that would be used to create a mesh for a more realistic and detailed 3D image. And while now video games have far and away surpassed this level of detail, it has become a rather regular trend to see in the 2D graphic design world and has increasingly diversifying in how designers are using it, both in their unique design style and for what purpose. |
Low Poly Art
Project REQUIREMENTSInspired by the style of DAVID MEGACHURCH'S SCULPTURES we are going to create low polygonal vector forms. The essence of the project is for students to analyze a very curvy form and create a plainer study from it. What is more organic than a skeleton? students will create a low poly artwork analyzing its organic form.
