Wayne Thiebaud is an American painter best known for his still lifes of edible treats and everyday objects in his singular illustrative style.
Wayne's Delicious subject matter! Thiebaud is associated with the pop art movement because of his interest in objects of mass culture, although his early works slightly predate the works of the classic pop artists. Theibaud also never personally considered himself a Pop artist. His most popular subject matter includes colorful cakes, slices of pie, candy pieces, such as lollipops, and the winding streets of San Francisco. Thiebaud has often spoken of the "Americanness" of his paintings. His depictions of cakes, pastries, everyday objects, and landscapes convey an earnestness and curiosity that can be traced back to the likes of Edward Hopper and earlier American art. While some have spoken of a melancholic, even sinister, mood in some of his paintings, they lack a biting critique, or rebuke, of American consumer culture and instead offer a meditation on it. Wayne's Artistic Characteristics While theibaud's subject is iconic to his art. The way he paints are also strong, identifiable characteristics. Thiebaud uses heavy pigments highly effective in the "Cake Window," thus consequently he adds a desirable and rich creamy texture to the cakes in his artwork. What is the texture? Texture is one of seven elements of art. It is used to describe the way a three-dimensional work actually feels when touched. In two-dimensional work, such as painting, it may refer to the visual "feel" of a piece. In Thiebaud's case case he used texture in his paintings to convey thick icing, or the glossiness of cherries or the glass of his Gumball machine. Wayne uses a wide range of shadow techniques in his works, utilizing space and form to his advantage. Using shadows, he creates three dimensional objects as demonstrated in the "Cake Window." In addition Wayne's reuses colors such as white, yellow, pink, and brown. He repeated these hues consistently thus he created a pattern in his artwork. Moreover Thiebaud's artwork consists of fourteen similar cakes all arrange in a neat order, hence creating more pattern in his painting. This also adds a good sense of balance in the artwork as well by neatly arranging the cakes in a seemingly symmetrical order. Lastly Wayne's work contains high value as there is a high lightness degree to his entire painting. |
