Still LifesA still life painting is a piece that features an arrangement of inanimate objects as its subject. Usually, these items are set on a table and often include organic objects like fruit and flowers and household items like glassware and textiles. The term “still life” is derived from the Dutch word stilleven, which gained prominence during the 16th century. While it was during this time that the still life gained recognition as a genre, its roots date back to ancient times. Why are they so damn boring? Unfortunately still lifes get a really bad reputation. when most people think of a still life they don't think of a exciting action pictures but a rather Still set up of some bland fruit!..However this subject genre has prevailed over the years. Over history Still lives have kept a strong foot hold as a prominent form of art. Fortunately for the genre some artist have tried to spice things up. A still life by definition is just a composition of inanimate objects arranged together. No where does it say it must be DULL FRUIT. Can a Still life say something are still lives just random collection of items, or did the artist have a particular intention when choosing them? It's easy to look at a painting and think, "Hmm, pretty objects", and quickly move on to the next painting. But the artwork usually goes much deeper than just depicting pretty objects. Even if a piece is purportedly meaningless, there is always an underlying thought process behind the work. (And if you want to look at art intelligently, it's important to examine the artwork with an investigative eye and an inquisitive mind!) An example of meaningful and conceptual still lifes is VAnitas. A Type of still life that explored biblical motif based genterall in netherlands. Vanitas still lifes were appreciated for their visual appeal and incredible details as well as for their deeper philosophical meaning. The term "vanitas" describes a specific type of still life picture. We may define vanitas as being: "a still life painting of symbolic objects that conveys a biblical or christian message about the transience of earthly life when compared to the permanence of Christian values". |
