Andy Warhols Endangered Animal Series
In 1983, Andy Warhol created a series of ten color screenprints that portrayed endangered animals from around the world. his subjects inclided a Siberian tiger, San Francisco Silverspot, Orangutan, Grevy’s zebra, Black Rhinoceros, Bighorn Ram, African Elephant, Pine Barrens Tree frog, Giant panda and Bald Eagle.
To highlight these endangered animals Andy used brilliant colors a notable characteristic of his work and emotional expressions of the animals that eluded to their fate / endangered circumstance.. By combining these things together in an art work he created a juxtaposition that highlighted the tension between reality and fantasy all the while pulling at the heartstrings of anyone whom view them. Andy Warhol was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. Andy Warhol’s works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. Andy Warhol’s Marilyn and Andy Warhol’s Soup Cans are some of the most recognized and collectible of his artworks. Artwork that elicits an emotional response is a task many artist try to undertake. It is the driving force behing branding and advertisements. "trust this company" " this game is exciting" etc. Graphics and art are constantly persuading people. There are a few common visual characteristics that have a psychological connection. Andy Warhol knew them and used them in his endangered animal series. |
Element of art that evoke emotionsColor Psychology
Every colour creates an emotional reaction in people. In design and in choosing promotional products we use colour to help guide emotion and give people an immediate feeling the first time they interact with something. In the art and design world, colours are purposely selected to meet a bigger goal. Examples of color meanings:- RED * energetic, attention-grabbing, exciting and aggressive YELLOW * cheerful, friendly, positive and energetic ORANGE * fun, playful, childlike, happy, energetic, modern BLUE * reliable, secure, trustworthy GREEN * trustworthy, refreshing, restful, soothing BROWN * stable, secure, durable BEIGE * durable, classic, neutral BURGUNDY * elegant, expensive PINK * romantic, soft, tender PURPLE * mysterious, sensual, regal LAVENDER * nostaligic, delicate GREY * classic, timeless, soothing WHITE * innocent, simple, clean, sterile BLACK * classic, elegant, serious, bold, powerful Expressive Lines Essentially, when you put two or more points together you create a line. A line can be lyrically defined as a point in motion. There are many different types of lines, all characterized by their length being greater than their width. Lines can be static or dynamic depending on how the artist chooses to use them. Hard-edged, jagged lines have a staccato visual movement while organic, flowing lines create a more comfortable feeling. Meandering lines can be either geometric or expressive, and you can see in the examples how their indeterminate paths animate a surface to different degrees. |
ASSIGNMENT: Animals with personality

Animals are just as diverse as us and they certainly have a wide range of emotions. in this project we are going to create a animal portrait that is full of "personality" . Inspired by Andy Warhol Endangered Species we will use Technic of Color psychology, pose, expressive line, and contrast to create portraits.
Step One: Find an image the show ALOT of personality.
Step two: Open illustrator and "Place" your saved image
Step three: use live trace and recolor in a monochromatic color scheme that further conveys the emotion/ personality of the animal. Exercise Activity: Getting familiar with illustrator
