Alphabet booksWhat is an Alphabet book
As a child you no doubt read an alphabet book whether in grade school or at home. An alphabet book is a book primarily designed for young children. It presents letters of the alphabet with corresponding words and/or images in efforts to help teach children their alphabet. History Alphabet books are one of the simplest – though enduringly, entertaining form of children’s books. They have been around for hundreds of years, and present the letters of the alphabet, alongside corresponding words and/or images. Alphabet books have been a common feature of children’s literature since Shakespeare’s day. In the sixteenth century, then known as ‘hornbooks’, they generally consisted of a piece of parchment or paper, pasted on a wooden board, and protected by a transparent sheet of animal horn. These early books displayed letters of the alphabet, a syllabary (a list of syllables), as well as prayers for novice readers. This syllabarium or syllabary, a now largely defunct element of the alphabet book, taught pronunciations of vowel and consonant combinations: i.e. ab eb ib ob ub ba be bi bo bu. Today there are many diverse kinds of alphabet books that captivate a reader’s interest through alliteration, onomatopoeia, creative narratives, poetry of all kinds, humor, and curiosity. |
Alphabet books from a different view
Edward Gorey and The Gashlycrumb Tinies
In 1963, prolific illustrator and author Edward Gorey (February 22, 1925–April 15, 2000) published an alphabet book so grimly humorous it became a cult classic to many people. The Gashlycrumb Tinies: or, After the Outing is an abecedarian book written by Edward Gorey that was first published in 1963. Gorey tells the tale of 26 children (each representing a letter of the alphabet) and their untimely deaths in rhyming dactylic couplets, accompanied by the author's distinctive black and white illustrations. It is one of Edward Gorey's best-known books, and is the most notorious amongst his roughly half-dozen mock alphabets. His Style Edward Gorey's style can best be described as part Tim Burton long before there was Burton, and part Edgar Allan Poe long after Poe. Edward Gorey and specifically The Gashlycrumb Tinies is a great example of how diverse Alphabet books can be. Not all of the genre is cute stuff like "C is for a Cuddly Cub" This genre can go in any direction the author and illustrator wish. https://www.brainpickings.org/2011/01/19/edward-gorey-the-gashlycrumb-tinies/ |
