Inkwash and Watercolor Gesture art: Movement

These previous painting were examples of Ink wash painting, also known as literati painting. These paintings come from East Asian and is a type of brush painting. For centuries, this most prestigious form of Chinese art was practiced by highly educated scholar gentlemen or literati.
The art of brush painting, aims to depict the spirit, rather than the semblance of the object. In creating a picture the artist must grasp the spirit of the subject. Sumi-e attempts to capture the Chi or “life spirit” of the subject, painting in the language of the spirit. This was achieved by using fluid brushstrokes that evoked an expressive quality. Artist try to capture the subject matter's essence in a few eloquent strokes. Each brush stroke is a meaningful gesture. |
Watercolor and ink wash facesInspired by the art of east Asia, students are going to use Photoshop to create portraits that utilize watercolor and demonstrates an emotion. Students will use the watercolors and ink washes to fill in the value areas of their portraits. Students must utilize color theory as they will pick between analogous or complimentary colors for their portraits.
